Decent Work & Economic Growth
The overarching aim of the education programmes and health and wellbeing provision at Central YMCA carry is enabling participants to better realise their aspirations – both in life and in their current or prospective careers.
Promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”.
This focus on each individual and by providing the best possible support and encouragement to succeed is reflected by a 10% increase in achievement rates and positive destination and progression data for 2022/23 for our programmes for young people.
Routes to employment at Central YMCA include, pre-Apprenticeships, Study Programmes, Apprenticeship recruitment and Funded/Commercial Fitness Training through our own provision and as an Awarding organisation for ~200 training providers and colleges across the United Kingdom.
Our training provision is supported through a dedicated Employer Services Coordinator who establishes an employer relationship to recruit new apprentices with their needs.
We also support individuals in employment already to develop and grow through our CPD provision and Apprenticeship programmes.
Through our direct provision we delivered just under 800 programmes to existing employees with 300 of these being apprenticeships.
We work incredibly closely with our employer partners to ensure, as much as is reasonably possible, the long-term viability of roles our learners enter, that they will be paid an equitable rate and working in a safe environment.
Our drive to support those most in need has gone on to inform the approach we take to programme development and delivery ensuring that it is aligned to the specific needs of multiple stakeholders.
Two thirds of learners completing a programme of study on our education provision live in the most deprived area of the UK.

The links between positive mental health and regular physical activity and productivity, success and individual prosperity are well documented and we keep that front of mind in design and delivery of all our programmes and classes. In this way we have intrinsically connected all that we do to individual purpose and, where applicable, organisational need. We have established a rich offering of enrichment programmes to further support our education and skills learners, and, as the year closed out, also began to deliver additional material to our YMCAfit learners to support personal growth, entrepreneurialism, innovation and brand building for newly qualified PTs and Instructors.
Over this financial year we have invested significantly in increasing our employer and partner engagement activities in order to increase the visibility of our provision and provide more progression/destination opportunities for our learners. The impact of our work isn’t just at an individual level, but within the wider sector.
NEET status leads to, and is associated with, long-term economic inactivity and unemployment. By breaking down barriers and providing access to education and training, particularly to NEET learners, we help to combat the economic inequality that exists in the UK.
Central YMCA regularly engages with senior policy makers across the country in order to promote the needs of the learners we engage with and celebrate their success. This helps to improve opportunities for learners who are often from disadvantaged backgrounds and at risk of being left behind.
